The SmartPhone Effect…Are You Ready?

Ok. We all know it.  The popularity of the smartphone is inexorable, rapid and a trend which cannot be ignored.

It is not surprising that, in 2011, the sales of feature phones tumbled while smartphone sales accelerated at a breathtaking speed.

According to a report by Strategy Analytics, during the second quarter of 2011, smartphone sales were up a full 76% while feature phone sales dropped for the first time since 2009.

Different companies are affected differently.  For example, Apple and Samsung are less affected given the preponderance of smartphones in their product line.  Motorola fares less well since it still relies on feature phones for 60% of its sales

If you look at the smartphone market, Apple features as the largest smartphone vendor with 20 million iPhones shipped in the 2nd quarter of 2011. Samsung is close behind with 19.2 million units. Nokia comes third with 16.7 million units.
